THE BUSINESS TIMES - Europe trading firm's comeback in Singapore | Print |

BUSINESS TIMES, 21 October 2014

Degussa Goldhandel hopes to convert the representative office into a branch office for trading next year. Its products are now distributed by local dealer GoldSilver Central, while it also has storage facilities with precious metals logistics firm Brink's in Singapore.

"We're very bullish on South-east Asia, because we see a lot of funds being transferred from Europe to S-EA. We definitely want to be one of the players in the game at an early stage than at a later stage," said Mr Scherer.

Concurring, Perth Mint's manager of analysis and strategy Bron Suchecki said that the fall in demand in Asia -compared with the exceptionally high numbers last year spurred by a plunge in gold price - is just temporary. "We look for longer timeframes."

The Perth Mint yesterday launched sales of its gold certificates through GoldSilver Central, its first distributor for the gold certificates in Asia. The certificates - wholly backed by the Australian government which has a AA+ rating from Standard and Poor's - appeal both to retail investors and high net worth individuals, said Mr Suchecki. "While in trading accounts you only see the available balance, this is a product that appeals to people because they are getting a physical piece of paper."

Brian Lan, managing director of GoldSilver Central, said that the firm has received more than 20 enquiries on this, mostly from the South-east Asia region.
