Consisting of both our silver collector coin celebrating the 175th anniversary of the founding of the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and our world-famous one ounce pure silver Vienna Philharmonic investment coin, this elegant special edition rolls all three elements of the Austrian Mint’s philosophy – invest, collect, give – into one.
The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra gave what is considered its first ever performance on 28 March 1842. Over the past 175 years the innovative orchestra has gone from strength to strength and is renowned today for its unique musical style. Though not quite as old, the Vienna Philharmonic bullion coin is equally illustrious in the world of investments and, like the orchestra from which it takes its name, has proved both resilient and sustainable. Two in one – the perfect pair.
The obverse of the 175th coin features portraits of the orchestra’s three founding fathers, Otto Nicolai, August Schmidt and Alfred Julius Becher. In the background is the deed of incorporation of the orchestra, which was founded on principles of democracy and entrepreneurial initiative. Not only did the original “Grand Concert”, conducted by Otto Nicolai, lay the foundations for technically and musically brilliant performances of classical symphonic works, it also provided the members of the Court Opera Orchestra with an alternative source of income.
The 175th coin’s reverse shows a detail from Max Oppenheimer’s 15m triptych “Die Philharmoniker”, which hangs in the Belvedere museum in Vienna.
The obverse depicts the great organ in the Golden Hall in Vienna’s Musikverein Concert Hall, the home of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. There is the inscription “1 Unze Feinsilber” which means 1 ounce pure silver just below the great organ. The obverse also bears the date of issue, the country of issue and the face value of the silver coin.
The reverse displays the popular design of the Philharmonic bouquet of instruments.
Comes in a case complete with a numbered certificate of authenticity and protective slipcase.
