Description
The coin’s name combines the first president of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger, with the name of the South African currency, the Rand.
Gold Content
The coin contains 91.67% pure gold, providing exactly half a troy ounce of gold. The remaining 8.33% of the coin’s weight is copper. This copper alloy makes the coin more durable and resistant to wear compared to pure gold coins.
Krugerrand Design
The reverse side of the coin features a springbok antelope, a design by Coert Steynberg, along with the mint date.
The obverse depicts President Paul Kruger, accompanied by the word “Africa” in both English and Afrikaans in the legend.
African Legal Tender
Since 1967, the Krugerrand has been recognized as legal tender in South Africa. Its value is based solely on the current market price of gold, which is why no rand denomination is inscribed on the coin.
